We were tasked with taking an ordinary object and making something extraordinary out of it, while also connecting it back to the album we chose to redesign. I chose to redesign the “American Dream” album from one of my favorite bands, LCD Soundsystem.
The two items I chose to combine were the American flag and a barcode. By combining these items, the album achieved a new form. It is a commentary on the American dream and becomes a proxy for what that dream has become. The American dream isn’t what it once was. It’s now a product that’s been packaged up and put on sale to the highest bidder.
I stuck to the color scheme of the American flag and chose to make the album title backward to reinforce the idea that something is off with the American dream.
Taking the idea one step further, there is a red album insert that pulls out and creates the red parts of the design. The idea was to have the red parts laser cut out of the cover so that when you slide the red insert into the album it completes the design.
